TIME TRAVEL TO MONDOVÌ

Two of the historic cores of Mondovi, the wards Piazza and Breo, reveal their magic in their buildings, streets and churches of rare splendour. The city is a place to explore the very meaning of time, of its flow and passing, far beyond its ancient architecture and places full of history that it holds.

A visit to Mondovì can only start from its oldest heart, Piazza, at the top of “Monteregale”. The buildings that enclose piazza Maggiore recount over eight centuries of history, like Palazzo del Governatore, Palazzo di Città or Palazzo Fauzone. The latter houses, in addition to the city Ufficio Turistico, the Museo della Ceramica, a collection that includes two hundred years of traditions of Monregalese ceramics. Do not miss the Chiesa della Missione: its interiors, valorised by the multimedia tour "Infinitum", stand out for the pictorial mastery of Andrea Pozzo in the decoration of the ceiling, creating a fake dome with impressive visual impact. Not far from the square, the Printing Museum recalls the history about technologies related to books and printing.

Going further up beyond the square, take the paved road that passes between the majestic eighteenth-century Cattedrale di San Donato created by Francesco Gallo and the sumptuous seat of the Bishopric, until you reach the Giardino del Belvedere, facing the hills, the Alps and Cuneo plain. At the centre of the Parco del Tempo, dotted with sundials, stands the tower with single-hand clocks, the symbol of the city. This area is also the perfect spot to observe the dozens of hot air balloons that every year, on the occasion of the Epiphany, rise into the sky for the International Aerostatic Gathering.

The historical connection with the nearby Vicoforte is underlined by the Via delle Cappelle, the ancient pilgrimage route of the local people to the Santuario della Natività di Maria. And, contemporary technology connects the upper and lower parts of Mondovì with the modern funicular signed by an internationally renowned designer from this area: Giorgetto Giugiaro.

Breo, at the foot of the hill, is the baroque old town, full of elegant streets and arcades, with shops and historic clubs. Don’t miss tasting Rakikò, the typical liqueur produced in the city. Make sure to visit the spectacular Piazza San Pietro, decorated with sundials and with the facade of the church of the same name dominated by the automaton of the Moor (the protagonist mask of the Mondovì Carnival) that beats the hours.
