CASTLES OF LAGNASCO - GARDEN OF ESSENCES
The Castelli di Lagnasco are a masterpiece of history and art suspended between Gothic and modern times. The complex geometry of the buildings designs one of the most evocative corners of the Piedmontese landscape, composed of the fertile lands of the ancient marquisate of Saluzzo. The setting of the castles includes the Giardino delle Essenze (Garden of Essences), a splendid botanical garden intended for the cultivation of aromatic and medicinal herbs, which houses several multi-sensory experimental trails accessible to all.
From Friday 4 April to Sunday 26 October 2025 the castles are open: Friday from 3 pm to 6 pm, Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 1 pm and from 2 pm to 6 pm.
It is possible to request the special opening for group visits (minimum 15 people) and school groups by calling +39 0171 502 925 (Saturday and Sunday +39 0175 467 10), or by writing to info@castellidilagnasco.it.
The Garden of Essences is open on Saturdays from 4 pm to 6 pm and Sundays from 10 am to 6 pm, with free admission. Guided tours are also possible for groups and school groups by reservation at giardino.lagnasco@gmail.com or calling +39 349 331 1672. The Castelli di Lagnasco are a castle complex incorporating three different buildings, built at the end of the 11th century as a defensive fortress. They became the official residence of the Tapparelli lordship. Benedetto I, an eclectic and refined man, transformed the fort into a delightful residence of great elegance and refinement, with a sophisticated architectural and artistic renovation.
In the 16th century, the entire Cuneo area and Saluzzo in particular were the protagonists of a culture that grafted episodes linked to the most advanced Mannerism onto pre-existing local figurative elements, alongside a rediscovery of classical culture. The world of symbology, magic and astrology thus meets in the Sala delle Grottesche, where refined hands like those of Pietro Dolce's atelier expressed a new way of feeling that pervaded life, creating a decorative vein that went hand in hand with that of chivalry and of the classical tradition. The Sala della Giustizia is unmissable, with its rich coffered ceiling, fireplaces and admirable classical scenes, as is the Sala delle Dame, with its exquisite friezes and portraits, the cellars decorated with leaves, shoots and vines.
The historic gardens of the Castelli Tapparelli, south of the manor with access from inside the courtyard, have been redeveloped in the Giardino delle Essenze. With its varied collection of aromatic plants, including kitchen herbs, interesting essences for the production of cosmetics or liqueurs, medicinal plants and fruit-bearing plants, the garden has a strong link with the territory, also in line with that evidenced by the Renaissance frescoes preserved in the historic residence. The sensory path engages the visitor in a series of sensory experiments and consists of five stages. In each stage the visitor can perform a guided experiment based on one of the five senses, making the information provided by the panels and operators of the Associazione Naturalmente Interconnessi as engaging, interactive and immediate as possible.
