Cuneo, a small patch of land nestled between the Stura and Gesso rivers, takes its name from the shape of the plateau on which it stands. The large Piazza Galimberti is the heart of the city and home to the renowned Tuesday market. The Museo Casa Galimberti overlooks the square, an ancient upper middle-class residence and studio where the partisan hero Duccio Galimberti lived with his family.

To the south-west of the square winds Corso Nizza, the centre of the city’s shopping: as the natural extension of the arcades of Via Roma, it is striking for its precise and imposing arrangement of buildings that ideally lead to the road to France. In the opposite direction, along via Roma, which is entirely pedestrian, stands the neoclassical facade of the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Bosco, whose original nucleus already existed at the time of the city's foundation (1198).

In Piazza Virginio stands the grandiose monumental complex of the former Chiesa e convento di San Francesco, which houses the archaeological and ethnographic collections of the Museo Civico. Back on via Roma, going up to the Torre Civica, built in 1317, you can admire a splendid panorama that embraces the city, the plain and the mountains.

One of the most evocative corners of Cuneo is certainly Contrada Mondovì, formerly a Jewish ghetto, where the Confraternita di San Sebastiano and the Museo Diocesano are located. The Casa del Turismo, headquarters of the ATL del Cuneese, the IAT Tourist Information and Reception Office, overlooks Piazza Ex Foro Boario, today a lively pedestrian area.

The city, with 1,350,000 square meters of public gardens and almost 13,000 trees, offers various possibilities for escaping into nature, for example for a relaxing walk along Viale degli Angeli, or for excursions and rides to the Parco Fluviale Gesso e Stura, which surrounds the city. A panoramic lift, also available to cyclists, connects the historic centre to the equipped areas of the Park. Surrounded by an imposing alpine amphitheatre, less than an hour from the main ski resorts of the province, the city is the ideal starting point for enjoying exceptional outdoor experiences.
