VOTTIGNASCO, ALONG THE MAIRA TRAIL

A small village in the Cuneo plain along the Maira river, Vottignasco owes its origins to the intense reclamation work carried out under the guidance of the Benedictine monks in the Late Middle Ages. Today its strong point is pig farming, producing the Salsiccia Nobile or Noble Sausage, a product with the Municipal Denomination DE.CO made by hand with lean meat.

The signs of the past are clearly recognizable in the ruins of the castle built to defend the village in the period when the Marquises of Saluzzo ruled it, then destroyed in 1537 during the struggles to gain control of Lower Piedmont. There is no shortage of testimonies of faith, such as the parish church of the Holy Family, designed by architect Giovenale Boetto, the chapel of San Rocco, the brotherhood of the Assumption and the small sanctuary of the Madonna del Bosco, on the edge of the town, built in 1600 in memory of the apparition of the Madonna to a deaf-mute peasant girl who was miraculously cured. Its facade has recently been restored and inside it houses a fresco of the apparition of the Madonna del Bosco.

The Sentiero sul Maira, of great naturalistic interest, is a tourist trail complete with signs that connects the municipalities on the banks of the Maira from the Racconigi river to Villar San Costanzo. It can be travelled on foot, by bicycle or on horseback, crossing cultivated fields and wooded areas where it is possible to see herons, egrets, mallards, woodpeckers and nocturnal birds of prey. There are many initiatives that animate the area: MTB activities, a duathlon, running races, nature walks and horse rides, gastronomic walking tours. For the little ones, Vottingam Forest has been set up, a picnic area with fairy-tale panels that tell the story of The Sword in the Stone and Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs.

Today, pig farming is the main asset of the local community. Visitors must try the special Salsiccia Nobile made by hand according to the regulations of the Municipal Denomination DE.CO which determines its ingredients and methods of preparation. The Sagra del Fagiolo e della Salsiccia (Bean and Sausage Festival) at the end of August is dedicated to the Salsiccia Nobile and to another typical product of the area. It is a traditional social event where good food is combined with dancing on bandstands with large orchestras, opportunities for people to come together and popular games. Furthermore, every year, on 25 April, the Proloco di Vottignasco proposes Mangia Maira, a food and wine walking tour along the Maira Trail, which attracts hundreds of visitors to the village.
