VALLI MONREGALESI

EXCITEMENT AT YOUR FINGERTIPS

The Valli Monregalesi are like an open hand that spreads northwards. Like a fan, these valleys start at the highest summits of the Ligurian Alps and open towards Mondovì and its hills and plains to form five main ridges, from which secondary branches lead off and sometimes overlap.

The Valli Monregalesi (Valleys of the Mondovì area) share a close-knit morphology dotted with ancient hamlets suspended in time and panoramic balconies overlooking the plateau with a view of the entire Alpine arc. Unexpected corners open up amid the rocks, woods and pastures, or lead downwards through the cave systems of Grotte di Bossea, Caudano and dei Dossi, actual underground worlds to explore.

It is not uncommon to find frescoed medieval chapels, such as San Maurizio in Roccaforte Mondovì, with its two asymmetrical naves, two apses and cycle of Romanic Byzantine frescoes. The municipality of Villanova Mondovì has a spectacular church, the Santuario di Santa Lucia, latched onto and partially dug out of the rock. Tourists would do well to visit the Cappella di San Fiorenzo di Bastia, a chapel built between the 10th and 15th centuries, to see its splendid 15th century frescoes.

The Valli Monregalesi have always been places of commerce and travel and therefore there are many trails and paved, dirt or gravel roads. One of these is in Valle Ellero, along the ancient Via del Sale (Salt Road) which emerges in the unforgettable Pian Marchisio plain before climbing towards Passo delle Saline near the Rifugio Mondovì. In Valle Casotto, visitors can follow the Roa Marenca, immersed in a forest of old chestnuts and beech trees. This trail offers lovely architecture, such as the Reggia di Valcasotto, and then climbs upwards to Via dei Cannoni amid pastures and panoramic ridges.

In the Valli Roburentello and Corsaglia, the itineraries are more centred on history and tradition. In the land of Kyé, the local dialect is related to the Occitan languages of the Cuneese Valleys and many paths can give visitors a kaleidoscopic view of mountain culture in the last century. These trails go from the branches of the Parpaiun network (over one hundred kilometres between Pamparato, Roburent and Montaldo di Mondovì) to the trails that enter the woods and slopes of Frabosa Soprana and Frabosa Sottana, right on the edge of the Mondolé Ski resort (Artesina, Pratonevoso and Frabosa Soprana). This area becomes a modern bike park during the summer, and bicycles are also a great choice for Viola Saint Grée and the Monte Alpet district, in the Roburent area.

Lastly, there are several religious themed hikes available in the area (from Madonna della Neve in Viola to San Colombano in Monasterolo Casotto, from Monte Calvario in Villanova Mondovì to Sant’Anna di Prea in Roccaforte Mondovì). Visitors can also enjoy relaxing walks in the lower valley near the Lago di Pianfei or along the fascinating circuit of Landandè. This area offers a wide array of experiences to match with a sampling of mountain cheeses. People who love sweets might enjoy Paste di Meliga from the Monregalese area, Biscotti di Pamparato or Cupete, walnuts or hazelnuts candied with honey and sandwiched between two wafers.
