GESSO AND STURA RIVER PARK RING TRAIL

27 km

A truly complete cycling tour route that allows you to see multiple unique wonders of the territory of the Gesso and Stura River Park in a single itinerary. Thanks to the many kilometres of cycle paths that characterize the territory, we will be able to pedal surroundedby the Alpine range of Cuneo, with the Ligurian, Maritime and Cottian Alps. We will see all the beauty surrounding the city of Cuneo, feel the fresh air near the two rivers and discover the unique natural features well described by the many explanatory panels. The first part stretches over a slight climb, in vast meadows on the valley floor with an exceptional surface; after crossing Borgo San Dalmazzo using the cycle paths, the descent along the Stura river is wilder, with large woods and ancient stone canals.

The complete ring route that you can cover stretches for 27 km with a very limited elevation gain; you will never find challenging climbs but always gentle and constant slopes, on an easy and well-beaten surface. You can therefore tackle it with any type of MTB or e-bike, or even a gravel bike. Despite the little physical effort required, the variety of landscapes and places observed is truly exceptional.

The itinerary starts from the Casa del Fiume and the Info Point of the Park, where you can also rent the MTBs of the “Parko Bike”. Immediately take the cycle path that runs along the Gesso river, which you should follow without detours until you arrive in Borgo San Dalmazzo. You’ll arrive at the town passing under the railway and with a last short climb you’ll reach the IAT office where you’ll enter the historic centre. Pass through the Largo Argentera roundabout and, once you have got to the roundabout that leads to the Stura Valley, exit the town taking Via Cavour. After a quick descent towards the ponte del Sale (in the only stretch where you need to pay attention to traffic) get back onto the cycle path of the Park parallel to the Stura di Demonte river. Unlike the side that runs along the Gesso river, this stretch is immediately wilder, and shows very few signs of human intervention, other than the beautiful canals built in medieval times, still defined by their stone banks.

Continue downhill following the efficient signage until you reach a small paved road and then the Vassallo bridge, at the canoeing centre. Continue on the dirt track, immediately turning left and complete the ring trail that stretches around the city. After reaching the point where the Gesso and Stura meet, ride the last few metres along the Gesso river, until you reach the area around the Casa del Fiume again, your arrival point.
