VERZUOLO AND ITS MEDIEVAL HAMLET

Verzuolo stands out for its ancient hamlet with its rich historical and architectural heritage. The castle towers over the medieval urban town from the hill on which it is located. In the fourteenth century, it came under the Marquisate of Saluzzo, which contributed to its expansion and economic rebirth.

Historical evidence traces the first settlements on the hill back to the Bronze Age. Today, the city of Verzuolo is divided between the medieval hamlet built on the hill and overlooked by the fourteenth-century castle, and a more modern part that develops along the plain in front. Some evidence of a Roman and Lombard presence in this area has been found, but its real development was consolidated in the 14th and 15th centuries under the Marquisate of Saluzzo.

The castle, a massive construction built in 1377 by the Marquis of Saluzzo Federico II, stands on the ruins of an ancient manor. An imposing, square-shaped defensive work, it originally featured four corner towers and defensive positions for crossbowmen. Formerly surrounded by a moat, it was accessible via a drawbridge.

The old village also houses the Chiesa Parrocchiale dei Santi Filippo e Giacomo, built in the early eighteenth century. The distinguished interior of the building houses important artistic works, such as the marble baptismal font, dating to the end of the 14th century, a statue of the Virgin in white marble from the end of the 15th century, and a contemporary marble crucifix.

Some of the more noteworthy buildings in the modern and contemporary part of the city are Palazzo Drago - formerly the town hall - which currently houses the civic library, the Ponte spinning mill, evidence of the thriving organzine market that had eight spinning mills and 215 workers in the second half of the nineteenth century, and the former Mulino Fissore e Sandri.

The recent history of the city is linked to the presence of the Cartiera Burgo, an industrial paper mill built in the early twentieth century thanks to the intuition and initiative of engineer Luigi Burgo. The paper mill, now part of an important group that has eleven factories in Italy and one in Belgium, is the pride and joy of the citizens of Verzuolo.
