VERNANTE AND THE MURALS OF PINOCCHIO

Vernante is a small village in the Vermenagna valley, closely tied to its history and traditions. The walls of the houses in the old town centre bear more than 150 murals that trace the history of Pinocchio. One event not to be missed is the celebration of the Assumption. It engages residents and tourists alike, in a party that culminates with the lighting of bonfires, arranged on the hills around the town, and a firework display.

A tourist destination added to the Parco Naturale Aree Protette delle Alpi Marittime, the village of Vernante is famous for its 150+ murals of Pinocchio, a real tourist attraction. It is a tribute from the town to its illustrious adopted citizen Attilio Mussino, the most important colour illustrator of the famous novel by Carlo Collodi. Two local artists, Carlet and Meo, have copied his illustrations on the outer walls of the houses of Vernante, creating a narrative path based on the adventures of the most beloved wooden puppet of all time, always a clear favourite with young and old.

In the historic centre, the Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Nicolao and the Santuario della Madonna della Valle, celebrated during the festival of the Assumption, are worth a visit. Each year the event engages residents and tourists alike in a party that culminates with the lighting of bonfires, arranged on the hills around the town, and a firework display.

A short stroll from the centre, you can visit the Fontana Bleu, which, according to local tradition, owes its name to Pope Pius VII, and the Tourusela, an ancient medieval castle that dominates the town.

Don’t miss the village of Palanfré, in the Grande valley, a jewel of mountain architecture and the departure point for numerous excursions, including one that explores the Bosco Bandito beech forest. The ancient craft of the knife-maker has also survived in the village. Even today, the local artisans produce Vernantin, a completely hand-made folding knife, with a horn or wooden handle, a product of excellence much appreciated by fans of this kind of knife.

Last but not least, an invitation to eat in Vernante is an offer you cannot refuse! The recipes of the local tradition today certified and promoted the mark of the town include its tasty stuffed onions, the ravioli alla vernantina, a real treat for the palate, made using poor but tasty ingredients, and the special pumpkin and corn cake.
