VALLE VERMENAGNA

THE PLACE TO SKI

Valle Vermenagna has always been a strategic passage from the plain in the north towards Valle Roya and the sea in the south and it offers many different options for tourists. The first ski facilities were built here in the early 1900s, and currently the Riserva Bianca district offers over 80 kilometres of ultra-modern downhill tracks.

Historically, Valle Vermenagna was in a key position between the gentle Mediterranean climate and the more rigid temperatures of the Pianura Padana. Located at the border between Cisalpine Gaul and Narbonese Gaul, on a ridge linking the Alpi Liguri and the Alpi Marittime, this area was frequently used by salt merchants and pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela. The valley has enjoyed gradual growth in tourism since the completion of the traforo del Tenda.

The Tenda road tunnel, finished in 1882, and the railway tunnel, completed in 1900, were especially important for Limone Piemonte, which became a popular tourist destination. The area was selected in 1907 by the “Alpini Skiatori” for their first training sessions. The location has changed over the years to become the current Riserva Bianca, one of the most important ski districts in the region.

The entire Valle Vermenagna is very popular with excursionists because of its many uncontaminated corners, which deserve to be seen and experienced. The same has happened in Val Grande di Vernante, an eastern section of the protected area in the Alpi Marittime, where the nature trail for Bosco Bandito has enthralled visitors also thanks to the effective signage. In Vernante, visitors can also see the Via di Teit, a charming example of traditional mountain architecture from centuries ago, immersed in a landscape of mule tracks and quaint, inhabited villages.

Vernante is also known for the murals of Pinocchio painted on the houses. These works of art were made from original drawings by Attilio Mussino, the first artist to produce the coloured illustrations featured in Collodi’s book and an honorary citizen of this village. A museum in the centre of Vernante displays his creative work.

From Limone Piemonte, the climb up to Colle della Boaria through the Vallone di San Giovanni surprises and captivates visitors because they do not expect the sudden appearance of pastures near the Alta Via del Sale (Salt Road), which is now a paradise for hikers and cyclists. Visitors intending to reach Colle di Tenda are strongly advised to take the ring path that passes near Fort Central, Fort Pepin and Fort Tabourde, to discover the fascinating fortifications built towards the end of the 1800s. These military buildings make up the entrenched camp of Tenda, that is now on the border between Italy and France.

In the lower valley, the Sentiero Valerio Tassone in Robilante allows visitors to get a closer look at the ancient tradition of chestnut cultivation, and it also offers a pleasant didactic program for children focusing on the forest and its inhabitants. While visitors are in the valley, we suggest making stops at the Museo della Fisarmonica to learn about accordions and the Museo Ferroviario to learn about railways.
