VALLE MONGIA, VALLE CEVETTA AND LANGA CEBANA

Mongia and Cevetta are two small valleys near the main Val Tanaro. Their gentle slopes mark the beginning of the hilly area of Langa Cebana. These three areas have distinct features, but they share the same history and cultural background.

Large chestnut forests cover 60% of this territory, and Valle Mongia is known for the small summer and winter tourist station in Viola. The ski area in St. Gréé, in the southernmost part of the western Alps, offers many opportunities to enjoy nature. The ski lifts also work during the summer, allowing enthusiastic downhill mountain bikers to try out highly scenic biking paths.

The upper Valle Cevetta is located mainly in the territory of Montezemolo, within the confines of the Riserva Naturale delle Sorgenti del Belbo, a rare example of a mid-mountain marsh area. Here, visitors can admire over 22 varieties of lovely orchids. The network of dirt trails and gravel roads and the existence of several facilities enable visitors to enjoy short excursions, mountain biking and horse riding.

The area of Langa Cebana features hazelnut forests and especially vineyards at Cigliè, Rocca Cigliè and Murazzano. In Sale San Giovanni we have the Arboreto Prandi: about 12 hectares of natural land covered with trees and grasses of great botanical and environmental interest. Visitors can learn about them by taking part in different types of activities. From early June to mid-July, the lavender is in bloom. Visitors can enjoy the rare beauty of a land known as the tiny “Piedmontese Provence”.

History runs deep here, well-represented by several castles: Castello di Lesegno; Castello di Mombasiglio, where the Museo Generale Bonaparte is located; Castello dei Marchesi Incisa di Camerana in Sale San Giovanni; the impressive Castello dei Marchesi del Carretto in Saliceto; and the medieval tower in Priero, which stands 36 metres tall.

Ceva is the vital centre of the two valleys. The characteristic charming stone streets and striking buildings of the old village are nestled into a small wedge dug by the Tanaro River and the Cevetta River. The Cebano area has been defined by experts as a CRU territory for white truffles, and the market for Ceva truffles is one of Italy’s most important. This small town is also the Mushroom Capital of this area and each year in September they hold the annual mushroom market, the Mostra Mercato Nazionale del Fungo, which fills the streets with mushroom experts, visitors and exquisite woodland fragrances.
