PREHISTORIC FINDS IN BRIAGLIA

The village of Briaglia is the ideal location for reconnecting with nature, set in a position that affords the most beautiful views. The elevated position and atmospheric paths of the Landandè trail network ensure unique glimpses of the area. But it is underground that the millenniums of history behind this territory are hidden, featuring mysterious cavities built there by man in the Bronze Age.

Set on seven hills, the small village of Briaglia is a perfect place in which to reconnect with nature and enjoy beautiful views. Its panoramic viewpoint, which plays host to an inclusive playground and one of Chris Bangle's Big Benches, offers suggestive views ranging from the Alps to the woods of the nearby valleys, and the vineyards on the rolling hills nearby. It also affords a privileged view of Mondovì Piazza, which truly comes into its own on the evening of September 7, when, during the celebrations in honour of the Nativity of Mary, an explosive fireworks display lights up the sky in the capital of Mondovì.

Traces of the millenary history of this land, initially inhabited by the people of the Ligurian Bagenni, have been located in some of the surprising proto-historical finds brought to light in the seventies by the research of Professor Ettore Janìgro D'Aquino. The most significant of these is certainly the underground cave in the Casnèa area, dug out of the marlstone about 4,000 years ago, in the middle of the Bronze Age. The complex, consisting of a long corridor, a well-cistern and some rooms, is perfectly oriented so that, on the day of the winter solstice, the rays penetrate the cave until they illuminate the back wall of the main chamber. The occasion is celebrated every year with the Sol Invictus event.

The Mondo di Pietra collection contains lithotypes and finds unearthed by Professor D'Aquino, and is located inside the former Confraternity of San Giovanni, on the main square of the village, next to the nineteenth-century parish church of Santa Croce.

The Landandè Trail extends for 55 km through the municipalities of Monasterolo Casotto, Briaglia, Niella Tanaro, San Michele Mondovì, Vicoforte, and Mondovì. Composed of back roads and dirt sections, it allows visitors to admire striking views, discover small and large works of art, encounter and learn about nature. The path is divided into different sections, called "petals", characterized and marked by different colours. It can be travelled on foot, by mountain bike and even on horseback.
