CUNEO: GESSO – STURA RIVER PARK

9 km (5.6 mi) total

A lovely stroll through a river park that embraces the entire city of Cuneo, known as “the park with a city inside it”. The park runs along the Stura River to the north and the Gesso River to the south and includes 28 km of bike route that runs from end to end. This itinerary follows an alluring pedestrian section along the banks of the Gesso River, closer to the city center.

Please note that itineraries may include roads where motor vehicles are allowed. Authors and trail testers are not responsible for the information contained.

In summer, we recommend taking some water and a hat, because certain sections of the itinerary are exposed to the sun. The time this walk will actually take is much more than the estimate, given how many playgrounds you will find along the way!

From the train station, head to the large roundabout to the left, then take via Silvio Pellico, which cuts diagonally to corso Dante. Continue to the right along this avenue with several playgrounds to the intersection with corso Nizza. Turn left here until you reach the large and lovely piazza Galimberti.

Here, take corso Garibaldi to the right. At the roundabout, continue straight until you reach the intersection with corso Solaro. Just to the left, take the panoramic elevator to the city sports facilities and to Parco della Gioventù.

Note: If the elevator is not operational, you will need to take corso Solaro to the right, then continue on viale degli Angeli and head down via Tetto Cavallo to the left (caution: narrow sidewalk). Continue along, keeping the soccer fields to your left, until you reach the river trail.

Head left to go around the sports complex, using via Parco della Gioventù to the right, which ends at the river park’s bike route. Now follow along the ample dirt road of the river park’s bike route, running parallel to the Gesso River for about 3 km (just under 2 mi).

We highly recommend leaving the trail now and then to get closer to the banks of the river and to better enjoy the view of mount Bisalta, which rises above 2,000 meters (6,500 ft) on the horizon. (The mountain actually has two summits, one at 2,180m and the other at 2,231m, hence the name “Bis-alta”, lit. “twice tall”.)

Continue alongside a small pond, then pass beneath an impressive overpass to reach a rest area with tables and a fountain. From here, follow the road to the right and through a wide curve in the direction of the santuario degli Angeli, which can be seen in the distance. This is the only steep section of the entire itinerary.

When you reach viale degli Angeli, we recommend going left to the sanctuary. From the square in front of the church, there is a stunning view of the river below and the mountains on the horizon. To one side, there is a café, while on the other side of the street there is a park with a playground.

From here, head back along the relaxing viale degli Angeli, which is closed to vehicle traffic, leaving the street safe for pedestrians, cyclists and daring little skaters. Not far from the sanctuary, you will find a playground nestled in a park with tables and a fountain.

Another playground with sand on the ground is located near the end of the avenue, where there is a café and Parco della Resistenza. Just beyond this, there is a carousel that operates in the afternoon. Just about across from the monumento alla Resistenza, take corso Dante to the left. Continue along this road nearly to the end (you will find three other playgrounds along the way) until you find via Silvio Pellico. Turn left here to return to the station.
