CASTELMAGNO

ALPINE HAMLETS, PASTURES AND PDO CHEESE

Castelmagno, a village known for its sanctuary at 1,800 meters above sea level, is located at the top of the Grana Valley, in the southern Cottian Alps.  Here, the valley opens up in all its Alpine glory, featuring lush grasslands embroidered with herbs and flowers. The renowned Castelmagno PDO cheese produced in the high mountain pastures of the valley is a delight you can’t afford to miss.

Thanks to the favourable climatic conditions, shepherds and their flocks still pass through this area in the summer months. Having passed the areas of Chiotti and Chiappi, the valley visibly opens out into a wide basin, rich in vegetation. At an altitude of 1,800 meters, stands the sanctuary dedicated to San Magno.

During the eighteenth century, the cult of San Magno spread at an unprecedented rate, especially in the countryside around Cuneo. This probably led the ecclesial authorities to use the security service of the Baia. Its main task was, and still is, to organise public celebrations throughout the year, with dances, banquets and fancy dress events, especially for Carnival and local celebrations of the patron saint. The Baìa di Castelmagno only goes on parade once a year, on the occasion of the patronal feast of San Magno, on the 19th of August.

To reach the sanctuary and enjoy all the natural beauty of the Grana Valley, you can hike along the Cammino di San Magno, a restored mule track, which departs from Campomolino and passes through the villages of Nerone, Chiotti and Chiappi.

Every summer, as part of the “Occit'amo Festival”, the Sanctuary serves as the spectacular setting for the grand Ferragosto concert staged on 15th August by the Lou Dalfin group, paying homage to the Occitan tradition of the valleys in the Cuneo area.

Cycling enthusiasts will find a monument to Marco Pantani in Castelmagno, located at an altitude of 2,481 metres on Colle Fauniera, one of the most difficult climbs tackled by the Giro d'Italia. The monument commemorates the exciting feats of an athlete who was no stranger to controversy, yet always a favourite with the public.

Castelmagno also gives its name to the famous, delicious PDO cheese produced in the mountain pastures of the upper valley, in line with a traditional processing method and a particular ripening technique handed down through generations of local master cheesemakers. It is a unique product in terms of flavour and aroma, and for this reason it is considered the king of cheeses.
