CARRÙ

GATEWAY TO THE LANGHE

Carrù has managed to keep alive the ancient traditional Fiera del Bue Grasso, a market exhibition whose fame has reached beyond the regional borders for some time now. The town hosts a majestic ancient castle, and one of the first Panchine Giganti (Giant Benches) designed by Chris Bangle as part of the Big Bench Community Project.

The Fiera Nazionale del Bue Grasso is a market exhibition of Piedmontese breed cattle held every year in December since 1910. Today, the objective of the event is to enhance the local livestock heritage and promote the consumption of high quality meats. It is an event with a strong commercial and folkloristic tradition. In the restaurants, and in the fair pavilion, from early morning onwards, visitors can taste typical local dishes, such as gran bollito alla Piedmontese (boiled meat) with seven sauces and tripe soup.

The Casa della Piemontese is located a short distance from the centre.  Alongside a space set aside for guided tasting sessions, a multimedia and interactive itinerary tells the story of the most widespread native breed of cattle in Italy and its strong link with the territory.

In the central square of the town, you will find the fifth giant bench created by American designer Chris Bangle. Yellow in colour, the Big Bench is surrounded by four other small coloured benches. The city centre also hosts Palazzo Einaudi, where the second President of the Italian Republic was born in March 1874. In fact, Luigi Einaudi, considered one of the fathers of our democracy, spent his childhood right here, in Carrù.

The Belvedere della Battagliera, overlooking the hills of the Langhe and the mountains of the Monregalese area, evokes the place where numerous clashes occurred between different opponents from the Middle Ages on. Opposite, the stately Castle stands out, currently owned by Banca Alpi Marittime, of which it is also the headquarters. The appearance of the ancient building is the result of various interventions commissioned by the noble Costa family. In the seventeenth century, the renovation works changed the typically medieval structure, transforming it into a holiday home. The interior retains large decorated halls and is now open to visitors during some of the events held in Carrù, such as the Grape Festival in September and the Piacere Carrù food and wine event in May.
