LIMONE PIEMONTE AND SKIING

Limone Piemonte is a renowned ski resort, one of the best in Italy. It boasts over 80 km of slopes that reach altitudes of up to 2,050 meters. Don’t miss a visit to the Agostino Bottero Ski Museum which traces the history of this sport in the pretty village of the Valle Vermenagna.

Limone Piemonte is one of the leading resorts in the history of skiing in Italy. In 1896, Swiss engineer Adolfo Kind described a new way of moving on snow with ‘skis’, which had already been in use in northern European countries for a few years. Some time later, the Alpine Corps formed a special department called the ‘Alpine Skiers’ and Limone Piemonte was where they trained.

The leap from there to skiing competitively was short. On March 3rd, 1907, on the slopes of Monte Vecchio, teams of Alpini (Alpine troops) launched a new, unique race. Wearing skis, they had to tackle a climb and grab a flag to take back to the start. In 1937, the first artisanal ski lift was installed, the toboggan, which bridged the 700-meter difference in altitude. At Christmas 1959, the Sole single-seat chairlift was inaugurated. It has since been decommissioned and replaced by a modern six-seat gondola.

Today, Limone Piemonte is an international ski resort that hosts the Riserva Bianca area.  80 kilometres of slopes winding from 1,050 to 2,050 metres above sea level, served by state-of-the-art facilities and surrounded by a unique natural panorama. Limone also has a ring loop for cross-country skiing.

Don’t miss a visit to the Agostino Bottero Ski Museum, opened in 2012 whose rooms trace the history of this sport in the Riserva Bianca. Thousands of documents, images and films from the Istituto Luce archive are presented in a new didactic-interactive exhibition designed especially for children and school classes.

Original equipment from the early 20th century is preserved in the museum, with numerous pairs of skis, sleds and other equipment for use in the snow, for pleasure or work. There is also a section dedicated to some of the personalities who played a fundamental role in the history of winter sports in Limone Piemonte.
