STROLLING THROUGH THE HISTORIC CENTRE OF CUNEO

Piazza Galimberti, named after the lawyer and National Hero of the Italian Resistance Tancredi 'Duccio' Galimberti, and Via Roma, the ancient contrada Maestra, are the beating heart of the city and the meeting point between medieval and 19th-century Cuneo. The large square, considered the city's living room, is where the most important events of the Piedmont provincial capital take place.

Not to be missed

Piazza Galimberti, named after the lawyer and National Hero of the Italian Resistance, Tancredi 'Duccio' Galimberti, is the heart of the city and home to the famous Tuesday market, one of the largest in Italy. Surrounded by ten elegant arcaded buildings, including the majestic Palace of Justice, Piazza Galimberti is one of the largest squares in Piedmont.

The Galimberti House Museum looks on to the square and on its terrace you can see the silhouettes that recall the famous speech Duccio made on 26 July 1943 to incite the people to join the liberation struggle against the German army. In the centre of the square stands the imposing statue of Giuseppe Barbaroux, an important politician of the Kingdom of Sardinia and Minister of Justice at the time of Charles Albert of Savoy. He is credited with the political merits of the establishment of the diocese of Cuneo and the great mediation work he carried out to bring about the reform of the legislative codes (civil, criminal, criminal procedure and commercial).

Via Roma, the city's historic thoroughfare once known as contrada Maestra, has always had a strong commercial vocation with many shops and political and religious buildings. Since 2015, the redevelopment work carried out has given the historic centre a completely new face: facades embellished with frescoes, medieval architecture and noble palaces have returned to their former glory. A true journey into beauty made up of sundials, coats of arms, painted arcades, elegant trompe l'oeil and sacred images.

The beauty of Via Roma is there for all to see and is an open-air spectacle 365 days a year. Entirely pedestrianised and barrier-free, every Tuesday it hosts part of the market and some of the city's main events.

Among the gems that can be visited as you walk around include the Santa Maria del Bosco cathedral with an 18th-century wooden crucifix and the marvellous altarpiece painted by Andrea Pozzo; the Mondovì district, the site of one of the oldest Jewish ghettos in Piedmont since the 15th century and today a picturesque pedestrian precinct; Palazzo Comunale, whose courtyard houses a copper reproduction of the Ceirano car (1903) and the 52-metre-high Civic Tower, for admiring the city from above.
