In the nineteenth century, paths and lanes had already been added to the place, with its cool, shady climate and rich wild vegetation: it was known as the “English Garden”, used by the guests of the nearby spa as the perfect location for relaxing strolls.
In 1990, the Park recovered the ancient site and set up a botanical garden that hosts about 500 species distributed in fourteen environments: These represent the main ecosystems of the Maritime Alps: from limestone rocks to various types of firs, the stream, the larch wood, the bog and the waterfall. This setting, designed to cater for the informative and didactic purposes of the garden, not only makes it easier to observe species that could only be encountered in nature after hours of walking, but also offers a complete, clear and understandable picture of the entire “plant world” of the Maritime Alps. Discovering the characteristics of each single flower is combined with the pleasure of grasping the links between the different botanical species as well as between the plants and their surroundings.
Part of the garden is also accessible to those with walking difficulties. With “Agil Valderia”, a circular route created with the support of the Lions Club, since 2021, people in wheelchairs and parents with pushchairs can enjoy some of the most significant environments recreated within the botanical garden.
Inside Valderia there is a circular itinerary, equipped with information panels on plants, geological aspects and culture. The path stretches for about one kilometre and can be covered in an hour.
