NATURE RESERVE OF BENE VAGIENNA
The archaeological remains of the ancient Roman city Augusta Bagiennorum stand in the heart of the Cuneo plain, not far from the town of Bene Vagienna. It was founded towards the end of the 1st century BC by the emperor Augustus, as part of a process that aimed to repopulate the territory, witnessing the foundation of Turin and Aosta in the same period.

The city, not far from another two more ancient Roman centres, Alba and Pollenzo, was not protected by fortified walls, but by a wall, that is, by a moat and an embankment, marked at the corners by towers. The public area of the city consisted of the forum, a large rectangular square surrounded by shops and arcades also housing a temple on one side, while the basilica stood on the opposite side, hosting a variety of judicial and administrative activities. The structures of the theatre and amphitheatre were majestic and the area also featured thermal baths, their structure visible in the city’s archaeological museum.
A small part of the city was brought to light by the excavations carried out by two professors, Assandria and Vacchetta, in the late nineteenth century, who rented the land from the farmers during the winter season. After the excavation works, which made it possible to map and reconstruct the structure of the city and led to the discovery of precious finds, now exhibited in the museum area, the two scholars arranged to have the findings put back into the earth and to return the land to the owners for its cultivation.
The excavation campaigns carried out in the 1950s brought the remains of the theatre, the basilica and the aqueduct to the surface, while the more recent ones allow us to admire part of the structure of the amphitheatre and the temple, where the remains of medieval burials have been found. To make the visit more complete and fascinating, augmented reality tools from your smartphone are available, thanks to the Tabui and Tellingstones platforms.
To promote the archaeological findings and the pieces exhibited in the Museum, near the Reserve a very active educational centre every year welcomes thousands of students eager to learn about the civilization of the Roman Empire.
