CIVIC ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM - BENE VAGIENNA
The Museo Archeologico of Bene Vagienna was established in the early twentieth century by Giuseppe Assandria and Giovanni Vacchetta, who identified the site of the ancient Augusta Bagiennorum (currently the Roncaglia plain) and conducted a series of archaeological studies there between 1892 and 1925. The two scholars from Bene Vagienna brought to light the main public and private buildings of the Roman city, founded by the emperor Augustus, probably towards the end of the 1st century BC, on a fertile plateau in the middle Valle del Tanaro. Since its establishment, the Museum has been housed in the eighteenth-century Palazzo Lucerna di Rorà, where a small room on the upper floor was initially used to host the artefacts found during Assandria and Vacchetta’s research.
