GESSO AND STURA RIVER PARK

The Gesso and Stura River Park extends for 5,500 hectares, a natural space in which to play sport, spend your free time, and carry out educational and cultural activities. Upstream it meets the  Natural Park of the Maritime Alps. It is a real “green network” of cycle and pedestrian paths that cross the park from one side to the other. To fully enjoy the nature and landscape of the park, a number of trails suitable for hiking or cycling have been identified. Notice boards, signposts and lecterns guide the visitor to discover the naturalistic and historical-cultural features of the territory. Specific activities are also organised here with schools.

Water is the lifeblood of the park, with the Gesso stream and the Stura river running through the territory in the municipalities of Cuneo - the authority that manages the Park - Borgo San Dalmazzo, Castelletto Stura, Centallo, Cervasca, Fossano, Montanera, Rittana, Roccasparvera, Roccavione, Salmour, Sant'Albano Stura, Trinità and Vignolo.

History tells us that the very location of the town of Cuneo was dictated precisely by the availability of running water there, useful for the area’s proto-industrial systems and for irrigation. Water was already a precious resource in the past, but it is even more so today, guaranteeing the life of the various animal and plant species that inhabit the banks of the waterways. The different environments of the park are populated by hundreds of animal species: 214 species of birds, 25 of mammals, 9 of amphibians, 8 of reptiles, 53 of diurnal butterflies as well as many insects and other invertebrates.

The park is made up of a set of different ecosystems that preserve a healthy balance between the river environment and the human activities practiced there for centuries. The vegetation mainly consists of woodland with oaks, locust trees, ash trees; the lowland forest of Sant'Anselmo and the Impero wood are striking. The rest of the territory is occupied by agricultural crops, meadows, vegetable gardens and riparian vegetation with alder plants, black and white poplar, and willow.

The park houses many buildings of particular historical and cultural interest such as sanctuaries, chapels, mills, villas, forges and farmhouses. The Municipality of Cuneo promotes recreational and educational initiatives for adults and children: excursions, moments of celebration, workshops, sporting events, conferences and exhibitions on topics related to the Cuneo river area. An ideal place for sports lovers, the park offers an all-seasons track for cross-country skiing, but also running, horse racing, roller skating, football, tennis, beach volleyball, mountain biking, cycling, swimming, fishing, trekking and Nordic walking, thanks to the services and sports facilities inside. The Cuneo canoeing club “Le Basse - non solo acqua” is also run near the Basse di Stura, a centre for learning how to canoe directly in the waters of the Stura di Demonte river, and a climbing wall.
