CASTLE OF CASOTTO - GARESSIO

The Castello di Casotto was originally a Carthusian monastery. The building, erected in the 12th century, was renovated and expanded in the eighteenth century by Bernardo Vittone. In the 19th century it was rebuilt and frequented as a hunting residence by Charles Albert and Victor Emmanuel II. The beautiful natural surroundings have preserved its beauty and majesty over the centuries.

The first nucleus of the architectural complex, today known as Castello di Casotto, was built in the Late Middle Ages to house one of the first charterhouses in Italy. By Saint Bruno of Cologne, it was characterized by a series of distinctive elements, first of all the quest, by the founding monks, for the so-called desertum, an isolated mountain area in which it was possible to pursue a form of extreme monasticism with minimal social interaction. The greenery of the centuries-old pines and beech trees still welcome the visitor today to a tranquil place, as they did of old.

A separate building known as the correria was soon added to the charterhouse, used to welcome the lay brothers and members of the community who dedicated themselves to manual work. This building was distinct from the one that housed the monks.

Today, no traces of the medieval structures remain. The rooms and the visible architectural elements are the result of reconstructions dating from the 16th century until 1770, the year in which the great construction site of Turin-born architect Bernardo Antonio Vittone was closed. However, in the correria building, you can find a splendid example of medieval architecture, the Chiesa di Santa Maria.

The acquisition commissioned by Charles Albert of Savoy in the 19th century was initially aimed at the creation of a large land complex to be used for agriculture, forestry and pastoral land. Soon, King Vittorio Emanuele II decided to convert the structure to Reale Villeggiatura di Casotto, making it into a summer residence and great hunting estate.

The premises of the charterhouse were therefore adapted to suit the new purpose, and the architect of the Real Casa, Carlo Sada, commissioned the reconstruction of the north wing of the complex, adding the church and the construction of structures suitable to accommodate the court.

The royal estate of the castle is part of the Residenze Sabaude circuit. It is the one located furthest south of Piedmont.
