SOLARO CASTLE - MONASTEROLO DI SAVIGLIANO
The primitive fortress of Monasterolo di Savigliano dates back to 1241, and was commissioned by Thomas I of Saluzzo. The renovations and extensions of the historic manor are related to the conquests and transfers of the local fiefdom. During the war between the Saluzzos and the Acajas, having been conquered by the latter, it was given as a fee to Martino Cagna di Agliè. After the family died out, in 1604 it fell into the hands of the Solaro family of Moretta, who became the Counts of Monasterolo. The castle is now owned by the Municipality. Its enormous, imposing volume is mellowed by decorations and turrets, and broken by the large tower. The building is now home to the municipal offices.
