VILLAFALLETTO

THE TOWN OF VANZETTI

Originally called Villa, the town is located north of the provincial capital of Cuneo, halfway between Saluzzo and Fossano. Villafalletto, which owes its current name to the Falletti family, was the birthplace of Bartolomeo Vanzetti, a famous anarchist who was executed in the United States for a crime he never committed, and became a symbol of the fight against discrimination.

The town of Villafalletto, originally named Villa, is located north of the provincial capital. The most ancient testimonies of this municipality of Cuneo date back to the second half of the 12th century. The village, with an economy traditionally based on agriculture, owes its current name to the Falletti family. They were its lords for 500 years, successfully not submitting to the dominion of the Marquisate of Saluzzo for a long period of time.

Palazzo Maggiore, which has been the seat of the Town Hall since 1986, is located in the vast Piazza Giuseppe Mazzini. It is believed to have sixteenth-century origins. Not far from the square stands the refined palace of the Falletti Counts, which welcomes visitors with a beautiful eighteenth-century wooden portal, concealing a garden with centuries-old trees. The Torre Civica, which dates back to the 19th century, but is of neo-medieval style, watches over the city, from among the houses in the historic centre.

The Castle ruins, dating back to the year 1000, testify to the importance of the village in the past. The Parco del Maira lies at the foot of the ruins: 3 km of grassy terrain featuring numerous paths and an excellent equipped picnic area. Just outside the town, the Baroque and Neoclassical-style Santuario della Madonna degli Alteni dates back to the 18th century. The large wooden altarpiece, present in the altar of the first chapel on the right, is attributed to Maestro Marchiotto Falletti and is one of the few paintings on wood dating back to the 15th-16th century in the province of Cuneo.

The Mortorio Pasquale, an event that made the Confraternity of Mercy, known as the Black Brotherhood, famous, is a sacred re-enactment that takes place every four years during which over 400 figures in eighteenth-century costume participate.

Bartolomeo Vanzetti, born in Villafalletto, is remembered today for having been executed in the electric chair in 1927 in Boston, together with his friend and fellow anarchist Ferdinando Nicola Sacco. They were erroneously accused of murder because they were anarchists and foreigners, and the sentence provoked strong protests, both in Italy and among American intellectuals. They were only officially proclaimed innocent in 1977. The memory of Sacco and Vanzetti lives on today thanks to the notes of the famous song by Joan Baez, Here's to you, the soundtrack of an unforgettable film by Giuliano Montaldo (1971), with Gian Maria Volontè in the role of Vanzetti. It is also commemorated by two plaques, one at Vanzetti's birthplace and the other in the square in the historic centre of Villafalletto.
