PEVERAGNO

FROM THE PLAINS TO THE HIGH MOUNTAINS

In the fertile fields that surround Peveragno, the delicious local strawberry releases its unmistakable scent, while proceeding through the chestnut, beech and conifer woods of the hilly area, you reach the pastures and rocks of the highest peaks. There are numerous mule tracks and easy trails, for both walking and mountain biking. For the more experienced day-trippers, the higher altitudes of the Bisalta offer rewarding excursions.

Peveragno rises at the foot of Mount Bisalta, whose name derives from its characteristic shape, consisting of two peaks that are close to each other but distinct. The town occupies a large basin facing northeast and is protected to the north-west by the hill of San Giorgio and the buttress of Moncalvino, while to the east it is open towards Chiusa di Pesio and the plain. The plain hosts farms where the delicious local strawberry is cultivated, while proceeding through the chestnut, beech and conifer woods of the hilly area, you can reach the pastures and rocks of the highest peaks.

The territory of Peveragno was inhabited by Celtic-Ligurian people, evidence of which is provided by the numerous archaeological excavations on the hills of Moncalvino and Castelvecchio. In the twelfth century, we have the first documented mention of an inhabited area (the one known today as Madonna dei Boschi). It is referred to as Forfice due to the particular conformation of the valley that forks into two narrower valleys. Just before the fourteenth century, the main town moved to its present position and was called Piperanium, taking its name from the Morozzese Pipa family. The Marquises of Monferrato, the Acaja and the Savoys then took turns as its masters.

The municipality of Peveragno is home to numerous religious monuments, the Parrocchiale di San Giovanni Battista which dates back to 1600 and is the work of Nicolis di Robilant, Chiesa Santa Maria del Paschero, the Confraternita di Santa Croce, which was built on behalf of the brotherhood of San Pietro in Vincoli in 1700, the Cappella di San Giorgio, located on the top of a terraced slope called Ripa Sancti Georgi. Just above the church, the colour of Chris Bangle's Big Bench pays homage to the Neretto grape, and is an integral part of a large sundial drawn on the ground. The Arco del Ricetto, an ancient gateway to the Castrum, has survived from the Roman period.

The Sant'Andrea Fair, which originated prior to 1396 and takes place in the historic centre on the first Monday of December, the living nativity scene “Natale in Contrada” and the Amicorti International Film Festival are all worth a mention.

Every year, on the first weekend of June, Peveragno hosts the Sagra della Fragola, or strawberry festival. During the two-day event, shows, music, walks and tastings of typical dishes and local products are organised.
