PAMPARATO

WHERE LIFE TICKS SLOWLY BY

Pamparato is located on the ancient transit routes between Piedmont and the Ligurian Sea. As in the past, still today, it is a pleasant place in which to stop, rest and refresh, enjoy nature, cultivate the spirit and tantalise the taste buds. The local biscuits, the pride and joy of Piedmont in the pastry stakes, and the aged cheeses of the village of Valcasotto, are two of its most delicious, characteristic treats.

Pamparato is a popular tourist resort, especially in the summer, but also during the winter, thanks to the ski resorts located nearby (Garessio 2000, Viola Saint Grée and San Giacomo di Roburent). Not far from the village, the Roa Marenca, a path of over 150 km can be distinguished, stretching from the peaks to the beaches. It joins two regions and spans sixteen municipalities, offering glimpses of landscape, history and nature that are hard to beat.

Built in the Roman era, over the centuries, the city passed from the marquisate of Ceva to that of Asti. It was disputed by the Houses of Savoy, Anjou, Visconti, Acaja and Monferrato, changing hands over and over again, and experiencing the brunt of the internal struggles that took place between the supporters of one or another faction. The territory is rich in monuments: the Castle dating back to the 18th century and the Parrocchia di San Biagio, located nearby; the Cappella di San Bernardo located in the chestnut woods, with splendid frescoes from 1482; the Oratorio di Sant’Antonio in Piedmontese baroque style and the Santuario dell’Assunta in the Arotte district; the Parrocchia di Santa Maria in the Serra district and the Ponte Murato, also known as the Roman Bridge, where the painting commemorating the transit of the Holy Shroud is located.

The name Pamparato derives from the Latin panis paratus, which means seasoned bread. In the past, the productivity and fertility of the soil made it easy to produce food products here, especially baked goods. Even today, you can still taste the typical Pamparato biscuits, which, according to legend, were the favourites of the Count of Cavour, traditional corn pastries made where you can breathe an ancient atmosphere that brings back many memories and scents.

In the hamlet of Serre, the Ecomuseo degli Usi della Gente di Montagna showcases work tools and everyday life objects from the past. Memories of an ancient period that have also survived in the hamlet of Valcasotto, with its ancient stone mill from the Napoleonic era, still in operation today, and its production of high-quality dairy products, made in line with the traditional ripening processes used for Langa and mountain pasture cheeses, which take place underground.

The narrow streets, dotted with no less than 23 fountains bearing women's names, courtyards and secret corners from which romantic glimpses or distant views span out, are the venues for Maestri di gusto in fiera, an event that fills the little mountainside hamlet with artists, artisans and 0km products every year in spring. The market fair, the ultimate showcase for Piedmontese tradition, has been awarded the regional standard of excellence. In summer, the Festival dei Saraceni, a historic concert event with top-level artistic programming, is not to be missed.
