MAGLIANO ALPI

AND THE ROMAN REMAINS

The area on which Magliano Alpi stands boasts a thousand-year history. Archaeological research has brought to light traces of Roman settlements located there in the period between the end of the Republic and the beginning of the Empire. The mountainous area of the territory is breathtaking, with pastures reaching an altitude of 1,800 metres.

Magliano Alpi is located in the territory of the ancient Liguri Bagienni. Archaeological finds in the Beinale hilly area also testify to subsequent Roman settlements in the area. In the Middle Ages, the village was part of the Monregalese territory, participating with its own representatives in the only administration that governed the fate of the countryside, and the villas considered part of the Mondovì district.

In the village, the Chiesa Parrocchiale della Natività di Maria Santissima, built starting from the second half of the 16th century, is a large building with three naves which preserves two wooden statues of the Virgin of the Rosary, a pulpit from the 17th-18th century and the organ built by the brothers Vittino di Centallo in 1870. Instead, in Magliano Soprano, the Chiesa Parrocchiale della Beata Vergine Maria del Carmine is a completely nineteenth-century structure, while the Cappella di San Rocco preserves a beautiful frescoed triptych, attributable to the first half of the sixteenth century and depicting the Madonna with Child and Saints.

The local agricultural industry is key to the town’s economy. It includes traditional forage and cereal crops, as well as the more recent soy, flax and sunflower crops. The vine that produces Neiretto and Dolcetto grapes survives on the Beinale plateau. The local livestock sector focuses on the Piedmontese breed of cattle, known for its excellent meat and for the production of milk.

One unique feature of the town of Magliano Alpi is that it has two distinct territories. On one side, there is the area where the village is located, on the other the area of the Seirasso, Raschera and Brignola Alps, in the Ligurian Alps, which became an integral part of the municipality in 1875. From that date on, Magliano became Magliano Alpi. To celebrate its alpine territories, in autumn the town organizes the traditional Fiera dei Marghè, an opportunity to celebrate the return of the herds from the alpine pastures and to taste the area’s delicious mountain cheeses, such as Raschera, a local product of undisputed excellence.
