DEMONTE

A CORNER OF PROVENCE IN VALLE STURA

This mountain village, already known in Roman times, today retains its central position along the road that connects the Cuneo area with its neighbour, France. Walking through its arcades, you can catch glimpses of its medieval past, and all the liveliness of the town emerges. Between June and July, the meadows at the entrance to the town are covered with lavender, offering ideal views for magnificent snapshots.

The origins of Demonte, a village in the Stura Valley, date back to Roman times, a period in which it was an important commercial passageway connected to nearby Gaul. Thanks to its strategic position, the town was chosen by the House of Savoy as a military stronghold. In 1590, Carlo Emanuele entrusted the construction of the Forte della Consolata to engineer Gabrio Busco. It was later demolished following the armistice of Cherasco in 1796. Today, the area of the defensive structure is accessible through guided tours organised by the Tourist Office of the town.

The historic centre is full of inspiring places: from the Town Hall, a former noble palace, to the medieval civic tower, passing the seventeenth-century Chiesa della Misericordia, seat of the Disciplinati Neri, and the Parrocchiale di San Donato, which preserves an interesting fresco dedicated to the Battle of Lepanto by Flemish painter Giovanni Claret. No visitor can afford to miss a visit to Palazzo Borelli, formerly Bolleris, with its Baroque layout, and wonderful garden with four terraces, connected by the gallery dedicated to King Carlo Alberto who stayed on the noble floors of the residence several times in the first half of the nineteenth century.

Between June and July, Demonte turns into a corner of Provence thanks to its fields of “izòp”, lavender in the Occitan language. At the centre of a valley devoted to outdoor life, the village is an ideal base for holidays based on relaxation, pure air and outdoor activities, with the possibility of hiking, biking or horseback riding, but also rafting descents along the Stura River. In winter, you can explore the surroundings on snowshoes or go cross-country skiing in nearby Festiona.

Demonte was the birthplace of the painter, poet and writer Lalla Romano, great-granddaughter of the mathematician Giuseppe Peano and author of the novel "Le parole tra noi read", winner of the Strega Prize in 1969.
