CASTELNUOVO DI CEVA

BETWEEN PIEDMONT AND LIGURIA

Castelnuovo di Ceva is a small town located at the far eastern edge of the Province of Cuneo, on the border with Liguria. It is found adjacent to the Valbormida, and has its same physical characteristics, located on a vast plateau, at an altitude of about 800 metres, making it particularly impressive from a landscape point of view.

The territory of the municipality, spanning just over 6 square kilometres, has extremely abundant water resources. These also supply the Langhe aqueduct. It is almost entirely covered in dense chestnut and beech woods. Featuring pre-existing trails, thanks to the intersection of numerous roads designed to reach the forest, it is an obvious choice for nature walks, which often lead to places of particular natural beauty, such as waterfalls, waterways, lakes and huge rocks.

The paved road ends in the village and, today, you have to make a conscious detour to get there unless you continue on the dirt road towards Murialdo. Yet the town justifies its raison d'être by the fact that, at least since the Middle Ages, it was located on the strategic routes that connected the lands of Langa, Alba and Asti with the Ligurian coast, Finale, Noli, and Albenga. Evidence of the important role it played is provided by a medieval tower, 24 metres tall, and a Romanesque chapel with a precious cycle of frescoes dated 1459 depicting, among other things, the martyrdom of San Maurizio to whom it is dedicated.

The town is a good destination for those seeking a simple, genuine welcome in the countryside. Castelnuovo di Ceva stubbornly continues to pursue its age-old peasant activity, and its most typical product is the borlotti bean. The Town Hall, the Church and the restaurant are the buildings that characterise the beauty of the charming square around which the village develops, gathered on a plateau facing south and overlooking the fields. It is animated by a community that knows how to foster opportunities for meeting, spending time and celebrating with their fellow citizens, especially in summer.

Today, thanks to the renewed and interesting focus on the countryside, genuine products and quality of life, projects designed to enhance the town and its territory are being launched, with a view to attracting new residents, or hosting those who want to spend their free time in a natural environment, perhaps rediscovering, on foot or by bicycle, those ancient, panoramic paths between sea and mountains that still characterize the territory today.
