VICOFORTE – VICOFORTE: THE CLIMB TO PRATO NEVOSO
58 km
The climb to Prato Nevoso has hosted the stage arrival points of many Tours and Giro d’Italia events and has witnessed many Italian and foreign athletes ride to victory in the final stages. In 2000, it was Garzelli who won the 18th stage of the Giro d’Italia with a sprint ahead of Simoni and Casagrande: that day Casagrande held on to the pink jersey, but Prato Nevoso was the prelude to the explosive final of the 83rd edition of the race that saw Stefano Garzelli triumph. In 2007 the Grande Boucle stopped for three days in the province of Cuneo and on the first day, Simon Gerrans arrived first in Prato Nevoso. From Vicoforte to Vicoforte, passing through the magical “Malanotte” climb, immersed in nature with the opportunity to admire unique and exciting views.

The route starts from Vicoforte Mondovì, from the square of the beautiful Sanctuary, renowned for its elliptical dome, the largest in the world. The first few kilometres you will cover are slightly downhill and will allow you to warm up quickly for the first easy hill that will take you to Monastero Vasco.
A short descent leads you to a long slope with a slight gradient that will facilitate your approach to the climb. When you reach the roundabout at the end of the straight road, turn left and climb the steep stretch of road, quickly changing gears. This spans about a hundred meters and has an 11% gradient. Beyond it, the road continues uphill but with lighter gradients never exceeding 6% - 7%, up to the town of Miroglio.
Once you’ve passed the built-up area of the small village of Miroglio, the long straight road highlights the increase in slope you will face after a few kilometres, which reaches its maximum gradient near the avalanche barriers. When you reach the middle of the climb, leave the main road that leads to Artesina and turn left. Cross the bridge and take the last stretch of road towards Prato Nevoso.
From here, the slope becomes more regular and the road features long bends immersed in a wooded area. You will reach the access to the Prato Nevoso ski resort after 11 km.
The effort is not over yet: continue for another 4 kilometres of winding road to the summit of “Malanotte” where the asphalt ends and a stop will allow you to enjoy a wonderful landscape on the Cuneo plain.
After a well-deserved break, start the descent: the first hairpin bends will be the same as those of the ascent, but when you reach the square with the ski lifts, turn left towards Col del Prel. A stretch of a few kilometres through fir trees and grassy meadows leads you to the top of the Valle Corsaglia that you will cross as you make your way down. An easy descent will lead you to Moline, from which with one last blast of energy you will have to go up a short ramp of about 1 km. From here you can enjoy a beautiful view from the ledge overlooking Vicoforte, the Cuneo plain and the wonderful Monviso, the “King of Stone”.
