CASTELDELFINO

HISTORY, TOURISM, AND NATURE

Casteldelfino is a town in the Varaita Valley with a past rich in history that thrives as a result of agriculture and tourism. Located in a basin where the valleys of Chianale and Bellino converge, like the other villages in the upper valley, it hosts the kind of tourism that protects and promotes nature, the cultural traditions of the mountains and outdoor sports activities.

The town of Casteldelfino has been known as Villa Sant'Eusebio since the 10th century. Umberto II, the last Dauphin, had a castle built in 1330, Castrum Delphini, from which the village took its name when the population moved there in 1431. Here, the Savoy family defeated the French in 1628, during the War of the Montferrat Succession. Annexed to the kingdom of Sardinia by the Treaty of Utrecht, in 1743 Casteldelfino was the scene of the bloody clashes between the Piedmontese and the Franco-Spaniards.

Today, all that remain of the castle are a few ruins, while important recovery and restoration interventions have preserved the cappella (chapel) di Sant'Eusebio, in Romanesque style, with its 14th century bell gable. At the entrance to the town, a square tower stands alongside the parish church dedicated to Santa Margherita. The Museo Etnografico (Ethnographic Museum), dedicated to the traditions and ancient customs of the village, and the I santi del popolo open air museum are also worth a visit.

Casteldelfino is the starting point for excursions and walks, in particular to the largest stone pine forest in the Alps, the Alevè, to which a visitor centre in the village is also dedicated, and, of course for ascents to Monviso and Pelvo. The surrounding paths are ideal terrain for mountain bikes while the valley road that leads to Colle dell'Agnello at an altitude of 2,744 metres of is one of the most beautiful climbs in Italy, a must for racing bike fans. The summer sports available include rock climbing and sport fishing.

With the arrival of winter, snowshoe trails, ski mountaineering trails and ice waterfalls open up. However, the pride and joy of the town is still its status as a Nordic skiing destination, with winding slopes approved for national competitions totalling an approximate distance of about 12 km.
