BARGE

THE VILLAGE OF STONE

The legend of the territory of Barge, famous worldwide for its precious stone mines and stone quarries, which were even mentioned by Leonardo Da Vinci, has created a real civilization of stone in this area. Bargiolina, the typical local stone, can be admired in the wonderful floor of the San Giovanni Battista parish church.

The Barge area is world famous for its precious stone and stone mining, an activity that has created a real stone civilization in this area. Barge is overlooked by Mount Bracco, known as Leonardo's Mountain, since the Italian genius spoke of its stone quarries, describing them as "white like Carrara marble". Walking downhill through the narrow streets of the town, to the castle that towers above the small but characteristic Piazza della Madonna, you can admire its many monuments and churches of historical and artistic importance.

In the parish church of San Giovanni Battista, designed by the master of the Monregalese Baroque, Francesco Gallo, the highlight is the floor, made of quartzite, the local stone also known as “Bargiolina”. The Romanesque bell tower and the baptismal font are all that remains of the older building. The niche with the statue of San Giovanni Battista, added in 1911 and the portal are two particular elements of the parish church, in Piedmontese Baroque style.

The Museo Etnografico “La Brunetta” (Ethnographic Museum) is located in the upper part of the Torriana area, on the slopes of Mount Bracco. The building, part of an ancient rural settlement, is the venue of a permanent exhibition of objects related to the peasant and artisan world. Exhibitions on the cultivation of chestnuts and vines, and on the wine-making process are set up in a special space.

Golosità del Monviso, an event that usually takes place at the end of July, is a trail of discovery featuring the town’s food and wine products, the mastery of its excellent artisan foods, its characteristic local dishes and delicacies: a showcase that captures the essence of the enchanting Monviso, the lands that surround it and their traditions.

The Cena in Bianco is one of the area’s most popular themed nights. Ottobrata, on the other hand, is an autumn event during which local producers take to the streets, offering a variety of home-made delicacies.
