Argentera rises at an altitude of 1,650 metres, at the beginning of a long series of hairpin bends leading to Colle della Maddalena, the international pass that connects the Stura Valley with France. The road is very popular with motorcyclists as it offers one of the most beautiful sequences of hairpin bends in the Maritime Alps.

Enchanting high mountain landscapes open out around Argentera, in an environment considered unique for its unparalleled biodiversity and many Alpine lakes. The Roburent Lakes and the Maddalena Lake, which opens out into a lush prairie on top of the Maddalena hill, are among the most scenic in the Stura Valley.

The toponymal Argentera derives from the silver lead mines present in the area in ancient times. The town is made up of several hamlets. Grange, located upstream of the main centre, hosts houses built on ruined buildings, which still maintain the characteristic typology of Alpine houses. Bersezio is the most populated area of the municipality and it hosts the town hall. Here you can see ancient houses with very steep roofs, once covered with rye straw. Bersezio is also where the Chiesa di San Lorenzo is located, an ancient medieval building which preserves a Roman marble slab with a bas-relief depicting two warriors on its exterior.

Ferrere is a characteristic mountain village located in a large valley full of pastures. The township is a magnificent example of Alpine architecture. Here stands the Mizoun del Countrabandìer, or the "smuggler's house". It is a house-museum that testifies to the illegal practice of smuggling with which the inhabitants of the upper valley supplemented their rather paltry incomes in the winter period.

The Argentera ski resort offers about 20 kilometres of slopes immersed in a dense forest of fir and larch trees. The charm of this Alpine environment not only attracts skiers, but also freeriders and snowboarders. The slopes offer gradients suitable for everyone. A chairlift and some ski lifts are in operation, including one reserved for children. Another resource of Argentera is ski mountaineering: there are countless possibilities for excursions along the wide side valleys.
