Please note that itineraries may include roads where motor vehicles are allowed. Authors and trail testers are not responsible for the information contained.
Because the dirt road is unfortunately open to vehicle traffic, we recommend avoiding taking this route late Sunday mornings, when lunchtime traffic will likely kick up too much dust. Starting out earlier will make for a much more enjoyable walk. A large playground adjacent to a picnic area can also be found in San Giacomo di Roburent along the highway in the direction of Mondovì.

This will take you downhill to some red-and-white signs marked “D02 Loc. Vernagli”. The paved road continues slightly downhill. When you begin to leave the center of town and reach the final, somewhat isolated houses, go around the curve and keep to the left, then turn immediately downhill to the right. This almost immediately becomes a dirt road, and you will now begin climbing gradually and constantly.
Along the way, you will find a number of forks in the road with indications of variations to get to Vernagli, but they all make the trip longer and are designed for cyclists. Because the return trip is another 6 km, it’s best to keep to the main road. The entire route is partially in the woods, so shady but not overly so, making for a pleasant, relaxing walk.
When the road starts climbing more steeply, turn off to the right along a flat road that will take you directly to rifugio La Maddalena, named after a chapel located in the village behind it (fountain). Vernagli is a lovely area with ample fields, a playground, and stunning views of the mountains and of the valley below.
