THE VIA DEL SALE: FROM THE ALPS TO THE SEA

111 km

The Via del Sale: a dense network of paths that connects Limone Piemonte to the Ligurian sea. Characterized by white roads located at a high altitude where uncontaminated nature and breathtaking views come together. Perfect paths to be travelled by mountain bike or e-bike. The Alpine arc located between Piedmont, France and Liguria will be the backdrop for our rides. A rich vegetation, hosting ibex, chamois, marmots and military fortifications will characterise the panoramas we’ll see during the tour. At the end of this fantastic journey, the sea of the Ligurian Riviera awaits us and the opportunity to dive in for a nice regenerating dip.

The full route is about 111 km long, with an elevation gain of over 2,400 metres. It is an itinerary that we recommend you tackle with a front or full MTB or e-bike as the terrain it features is mostly unpaved and bumpy. A high mountain road where your hard work and sweat are rewarded by the pristine beauty of the landscapes and wealth of nature that you can admire.

The route starts from Limone Piemonte - Chalet Le Marmotte, where you can leave your car and set off on your mtb or e-bike. Follow the asphalted road for the first kilometre and when you reach Colle di Tenda turn left, and take the dirt road, which will take you through the centralc fort.

After leaving the central fort and the barracks, pedal east and you will soon reach the toll gate of the Cabanaira, which is located near a ski lift. Shortly afterwards, it crosses the Campanin hill in a succession of good walled hairpin bends and continues with slight ups and downs on the Piedmontese side. Just before the Boaria hill you will come across a spectacular and exposed hairpin bend carved into the rock, also known as Zabriskie Point.

Continue into the Carsene region, with its flat overhanging rocks and pastures to the Don Barbera refuge, in Colle dei Signori, at the foot of the Marguareis. Continue on the hillside road that goes around the grassy pyramid of the top of Pertegà and access the vast and dense forest of large conifers that make upthe Navette wood. Ride right through the wood, on a slightly downhill and flat course until you reach the Margheria di Loxe area, from which you will go back up the Tanarello pass via a strenuous climb with hairpin bends. Before the pass, you can opt to make a detour to the panoramic point of Mount Saccarello, the highest mountain in Liguria, and to the monumental statue of the Redeemer.

From the Tanarello pass, a long descent with more technical, irregular sections will take you to the Basse di Sanson. From here, it continues at a high altitude on the dirt road. It passes under the top of Marta (with its extensive underground fortifications) and passes the Bertrand hill. Going around Mount Grai, at the pass of the Sella d’Agnaira you will begin your last descent on a dirt track towards Colla Melosa, where the Allavena refuge is located.

From now on the path towards the sea continues on paved roads with little traffic. In a short time you will reach the Langan hill, from which a steep descent with hairpin bends leads to Pigna, an ancient Ligurian village dating back to Roman times. From Pigna, it continues at the bottom of the valley, touching the striking medieval village of Dolceacqua, and then finally reaches Ventimiglia.
