MONDOLÉ

VALLE MAUDAGNA

This amazing mountain and its characteristic pyramid shape clearly visible from the Cuneo plains ensure a wonderful ski mountaineering itinerary starting from the Artesina ski resort. The remarkable panorama from the summit sweeps over the beautiful Alpine valley from Mongioie to the top of the Saline and Marguareis mountains, and then as far as nearby Bisalta, the imposing Marittime Alps and the distant yet elegant Monviso group.

SPORTSPERSON

Since the first stretch of the climb follows the ski resort, great caution is recommended when crossing or skirting the slopes, seeking to make the most of the large spaces not dedicated to downhill skiing. It would be even more interesting to enjoy the trip to Mondolè at the end of the skiing season, when the resort is closed.

Climb from the ski lifts to Colle Bauzano: this can be enjoyed wearing sealskins from Artesina or Rastello (Ellero Valley) and walking prudently on the edge of the slope or better still off-slope. Alternatively, use the facilities up to Cima Turra and then descend initially to the Bauzano Pass, in this case wearing sealskins.

From the pass, climb the broad slopes towards the clearly visible spur descending from the summit. Pass around it on the left along the characteristic "Balcunera" and then gradually return over increasingly steeper slopes to reach the spur. Higher up, this turns into a ridge that is initially wide and then increasingly narrower up to the peak. The final ridge with wind-compacted/icy snow may make rampants or even crampons advisable.

There are various descent options, the first of which follows the outward route; alternatively, descend along the broad and striking "gully" only if the snow is well-compacted, otherwise along the various other gullies overlooking the Rocche Giardine basin, which must also exclusively be tackled when the snow cover is safe.
