BAITA ELICA

VALLE ELLERO

5,5 km

An evocative itinerary up the sunny slopes of Sant'Anna di Prea as far as the Elica Refuge, an Alpine chalet located close to the ski slopes in the Lurisia area on the ridge that divides the Ellero valley from the plains below. This superb location offers a panoramic view of the horizon which on clear days reaches as far as Cervino and Monte Rosa in the far distance. This itinerary is not too long and also ideal for snowshoe beginners.

The road to Sant'Anna di Prea is not cleared of snow. It may therefore be necessary to leave cars near the Prea Cemetery, which makes the itinerary significantly longer.

Follow the snow-covered road on the right of the Sanctuary dedicated to Saint Anna. Its fine notable façade dates back to the eighteenth century.

After passing a few houses that have retained the sail façades typical of this area, continue along the winding road at the foot of several superbly restored stone huts. Then take the right fork and, after passing a barrier, continue northwards through a wood of fir trees.

Ignore all the side paths and continue along the up and down track before making a U-turn in a shady wood of beech trees. At a crossroads, ignore a dirt track branching off to the right and, a ramp and another U-turn amongst the birch trees leads to a clearing with fine views of the Mondovì plains.

Move on, zigzagging steep ramps alternating with easier stretches on the side dotted with delightful stone huts. Pass by all the side tracks as increasingly open spaces progressively appear until the view takes in the peak of the Saline peak rising at the end of the upper Ellero Valley.

Higher up, follow the side of the former Margherita Refuge (1,400 m), used during the Resistance by the Ellero Valley partisan brigade.

A little further on, turn right to reach the nearby Elica Refuge directly (1,455 m) or continue as far as Colle Pigna (1,450 m), where the view suddenly opens out on to the Bisalta massif. From here, turn right to reach the hut.

Return along the outward route.
