3 EASY-TO-REACH RESERVOIRS
The Alps of Cuneo are full of enchanting lakes set among the high mountains and reached by beautiful walks along paths and mule tracks. However, if you are looking for a less demanding relaxation break suitable for the whole family, here are three mountain reservoirs that can be easily reached by car.
Not to be missed
The 'youngest' one is Lake Vinadio in the Stura Valley. Built in 2014, next to one of the perimeter walls of the majestic Forte Albertino, it is ideal for a family outing. With swimming permitted in the summer months, it lies at the foot of the mountains. The water generally reaches a maximum height of 1.40 metres. The area is equipped with catering facilities, parking, picnic areas and coin-operated showers. There are also footpaths in the vicinity for easy hikes around the area, which are also suitable for children.
Going up the long Varaita Valley towards the Agnello pass, you reach Pontechianale, the last municipality in the valley, entirely surrounded by alpine peaks that reach heights of up to 3,000 metres above sea level. The lake, which appears along the road before reaching the village, is the result of the dam built in 1942 to power the Casteldelfino hydroelectric power station. The small and old Chiesa area of the town was thus submerged to create another area further upstream. Visitors can see the remains of some dwellings of Cuneo’s small Atlantis when the water level is very low. Over the years, Lake Pontechianale has become a tourist attraction: families in particular like to spend their summers here since they can bathe in its waters. The beach area is close to the town centre and all the essential services. Visitors can also try their hand at water sports such as kitesurfing and windsurfing. A pedestrian promenade around the perimeter of the area allows visitors to enjoy the surrounding mountain landscape.
Located in the Maritime Alps Natural Park, Lago delle Rovine is part of the complex water system that powers the large Entracque power plant. Easily reachable by car or camper van, it has parking spaces, outdoor picnic areas, toilets and a bar kiosk. Its natural setting is enchanting. While sunbathing by the side of the lake, it is easy to spot ibexes, marmots or chamois, roaming freely around the park. They are accustomed to contact with humans and so quite tame. Bathing is not permitted, but the stretch of water opens offers another fun opportunity. The basin is in fact a fishing reserve, managed by an association that allows you to buy your fishing vouchers on site.
