THE CHURCH AND THE CONVENT OF SAINT PHILIP
The church of Saint Philip, the oratory and the neighbouring convent are a masterpiece of baroque architecture in Mondovì. The order of the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri commissioned the architect Francesco Gallo the church in 1736; the construction lasted more than 20 years and it ended in 1757. On the other hand, the convent was finished by Vittone in 1769, who has faithfully respected Gallo’s project.

The majesty of the structure contrasts with the tiny square of the quarter of Mondovì Breo where the church is located, creating a suggestive effect.
The church is a plain structure with a single central nave with two small chapels and slender pillars; barrel vaults are simple; plastered walls have are not decorated.
After the suppression of the religious orders by the Napoleonic regime, the main marble altar, with well-made golden bronze and silver friezes, was sold to Cuneo Cathedral and replaced with a faithful stone made copy. Artistically worthy furniture is located inside the church: among the others, the organ box purchased by the order of the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri in 1830 and attributed to the well-known architect Filippo Juvarra; the marble altarpiece of Saint Philip, illustrating the Virgin and child by the sculptur Bernero; the painting of the Virgin, Saint Anne and Saint Joachim by the court painter Vittorio Amedeo Rapous and located in the apse.
The bell tower was built in two different phases: it is clear the difference between the low eighteenth century part and the high nineteenth century one, created after the return of the Congregation at the end of the Napoleonic wars.
The convent of the complex of the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri shows an imposing size, too. It has has several restoration works, mostly to make the building well-lit. The oratory, today sacristy of the church, is outstanding and it is characterized by trompe-l’oeil paintings, marble floors and valuable decor.
