PALACE OF THE BISHOP - MONDOVÌ

Mondovì became an episcopal see in 1388 and in order to find a suitable base for the first Bishop, the city bought an elegant palace with a garden; around 1630 important works designed to embellish the property were commissioned. The Palazzo del Vescovado houses the Sala delle Lauree, or Hall of Graduates, where portraits of the most illustrious residents of Mondovì were displayed. The Monregalese University was based here from 1560 but its courses were suppressed as early as 1566. In the Sala delle Lauree, degrees were conferred to those who studied privately until the university was definitively closed. In 1719, once again, the sole purpose of the Vescovado was as the bishopric. In the Sala dei Vescovi, Hall of the Bishops, you can admire the portraits of the various bishops who succeeded one another in the Diocese of Mondovì. The Sala degli Arazzi, or Hall of Tapestries, takes its name from the four tapestries that decorate three of its walls. These were created by Flemish craftsman Francoes van den Hecke, one of the most renowned weavers of Flanders, active in the early seventeenth century in Brussels.
