CERVERE

LAND OF LEEKS

The town of Cervere is located in the busy plain between the cities of Fossano and Bra. Although its origins are certainly older, the first written document that mentions the town dates back to the beginning of the 15th century, a period in which it was freed from the influence of the nearby municipality of Cherasco. Today, the name of Cervere is associated with the renowned quality of its leeks.

The symbolic monument of Cervere is the Torre di Monfalcone. Standing 33 metres tall, it is all that remains of the ancient medieval castle that belonged to the de Sarmatorio family. The stately home had first been destroyed in 1274 and was definitively demolished in the 16th century.

On the other hand, the Chiesa della Confraternita di Santa Croce is of baroque style, built in 1700 on the perimeter of the pre-existing Chiesa di Santa Maria, of which a perimeter wall and the two pillars supporting part of the vault have survived. The building complex includes the church itself, the sacristy, the parish theatre and the bell tower, which has always been a reference point for the community’s civil and religious needs.

The town of Cervere is famous for the excellent quality of its leeks, grown in the fertile valley adjacent to the Stura River. The local variety is celebrated during the highly anticipated Fiera del Porro Cervere, or Cervere Leek Fair, a three-week event of tasting sessions featuring delicious dishes made with leeks, cooked according to traditional recipes, and with new, creative reinterpretations. Starting from the second Sunday of November, and continuing for the next three consecutive weekends, every year, the small centre welcomes thousands of gourmet enthusiasts and becomes the exceptional location of a grand gastronomic event.

In Cervere, in the Grinzano area, the evocative anphitheater Anfiteatro dell'Anima is located on a patch of land surrounded by the Cuneo Alpine mountain range. A large, 7-metre tall mask by Saluzzo-born artist Germana Eucalipto towers over the stalls, consisting of small sloping terraces. In the summer, during the Anima Festival, the show space hosts performances by big names from the national and international music scene.
