CARDÈ, A CORNER OF NOBLE PIEDMONT

The first village in the Po Valley, Cardè lies near a bend in the Po River. An ancient feud of the Marquisate of Saluzzo, it came under French rule in 1549, and then passed - at the beginning of the 17th century - to the Duchy of Savoy. The village offers a historical centre full of interesting attractions and a range of opportunities for nature excursions.

The first of Cardè's monumental landmarks is the castle built in the 13th century, an outpost of the Marquisate of Saluzzo. Partially destroyed in 1552 by French troops, it retains only a few elements from the past. Another point of interest is the bridge, the first in reinforced concrete over the Po, built on the northern edge of the village in 1914. It connects Cardè to the neighbouring villages and although not very high, it is an excellent vantage point over the river, the horizon of the Rock of Cavour and the Piedmont Alpine arc.

The town holds many gems of sacred art, starting with the parish church of St Catherine, in the immediate vicinity of the castle. Commissioned by Manfredo II of Saluzzo, it was completed in Gothic style in 1324, destroyed during the wars between the Savoys and Louis XIV, and rebuilt in the 18th century. The 19th-century funeral chapel of the Marquises of San Germano, the last noble owners of the castle, and the recently restored 17th-century confraternity of St Sebastian are other attractions not to be missed. Outside the centre, the chapel of San Rocco and the 19th-century sanctuary dedicated to the Madonna della Salesea are immersed in the green Cardettese countryside.

Outside the built-up area, the Sentiero delle Ochette offers many hiking opportunities. It can be travelled on foot or by bicycle, running for 14 km along the Po River between Villafranca, Cardè and Moretta. More than 100 species of birds can be spotted in an environment of forests and cultivated fields. Starting instead from the equipped area under the bridge over the Po, the Sentieri del Cuore (Paths of the Heart) offer walks immersed in nature, along the course of the river that is the symbol of the Po Valley.
