From Sanfront, follow the signs for the village of Rocchetta. When you have crossed the Po River, turn left in the direction of “Vecchia Centrale”. The itinerary here enters a forest of chestnut trees and becomes a bit more arduous, but the charm of the setting makes it worth the effort. From the Vecchia Centrale shop, continue along the paved road for about 100 meters before heading up a trail marked by signs and yellow arrows.

The trail here is fairly steep in order to avoid crossing through private courtyards, but it soon flattens out at a cart track through a lovely forest of chestnut trees. You will encounter several forks in the road, but they are all well marked with wooden signage. Continue up through the woods past a series of switchbacks until you reach Casa Forano, where you will find the road to Rocchetta, which you will use for the return trip. Here, you will find an information panel and a few tables.

As you pass between the two buildings, you will find that the trail turns to stone slabs, making for an alluring setting in which to wander. You will soon reach the first balma structure of Balma Boves, which features a long, runged staircase. Beyond this, follow an uphill trail that passes behind the falls (there will be lots of water in spring) to reach the heart of this enchanting village with its roofless buildings, given that they are already protected beneath the rocky overhang. Children are certain to love it here.

You are free to wander around the village, but you can also pay for a guided tour to see the insides of the buildings and learn more about the history and legends of Balma Boves. Once you have finished your tour, head back down along the stone trail until Case Forano. From here, take the dirt road to the right, which heads gradually downhill and becomes paved. When you are near the village of Rocchetta, take the paved road to the left past the cemetery to return to the starting point.
