FERA D'LA MADONA - VICOFORTE SANCTUARY FAIR

From 8 to 10 September, the Sanctuary of Vicoforte celebrates 'the Feasts' of the Nativity of Mary and simultaneously hosts the 'Fera d'la Madona' (fair of the Madonna at Vicoforte), one of the most important fairs in Piedmont, a large commercial event held for centuries in which hundreds of vendors participate. The traditional festivities are inaugurated on the evening of 7 September with the unmissable 'Feu d'la Madona' (Fire of the Madonna) firework display offered by the City of Mondovì.

8 September is a very important date for Vicoforte because, since 1595, the entire Mondovì diocese has joined the city of Mondovì in celebrating the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, to whom the monumental sanctuary basilica Regina Montis Regalis is dedicated.

The festivities, traditionally called 'Feste d'la Madona', begin on the evening of 7 September when the City of Mondovì pays homage to the Virgin of Monte Regale, its patron saint with a spectacular fireworks display. The fireworks, 'Feu d'la Madona', are set off on the hill of the City and can be seen from far and wide in the surrounding area. On the day of the Nativity, a procession is held from the Mondovì cathedral to the Sanctuary for the solemn celebration presided over by the Bishop.

This marks the opening of the 'Fera d'la Madona', a major commercial event that ends on 9 September, with the festivities finishing on the 10th with the 'little fair', known as the 'Ferota'.  In the area surrounding the sanctuary, covering more than 200,000 square metres, around 800 stalls with a variety of goods make up one of the largest open-air markets in Piedmont and attract thousands of people every year.

The fair is characterised by the sectors dedicated to agriculture and animal husbandry, with an extensive show of agricultural machinery and equipment, and an exhibition-market of farm animals, especially cattle and horses; the motor vehicle sector, the large number of refreshment stands and the fun fair, with around fifty attractions are some of the other highlights.

Spontaneity is the hallmark of this centuries-old tradition and it leads to an element of randomness in the location of products and vendors; this is why the event still retains the charm of a timeless popular festival.
