SAN BARTOLOMEO: VALLI MONREGALESI

Comune di Frabosa Soprana

3 km (1.9 mi) one way

A pleasant, easy stroll following Pluc and his adventures on your way to a panoramic chapel overlooking the valley below. Right from the town hall square, you notice something odd: cute, wooden dogs, some small that will take some spotting and others extra-large, like the one out in front of the town hall. These dogs are representations of Pluc, the mascot dog who will be accompanying you for a large part of this itinerary.

Technically accessible to strollers, although the section of dirt road through the valley may present certain difficulties, particularly when the grass is tall. A short variation can be taken from piazza del Municipio and along the pedestrian road in the direction of the parish church. Take the stairs to the right of the church to find the panoramic chapel of San Carlo on a site where it is said there was a castle in the 13th century. About 9 km (5.6 miles) away, within the municipality limits, there are the Bossea Caves, an interesting system of karstic caves that are easy to visit.

From the square (fountain), take via Crosi uphill and past the parking area, at the end of which you will turn left following the white “Carabinieri” sign. Continue on to the end of this uphill road until a fork in the road, then keep to the left and continue heading gradually uphill. At the end of this road, turn right and continue heading up the widest road.

Keep your eyes peeled, because Pluc will sometimes surprise you from a windowsill or other unexpected places.

Across from the Carabinieri station, take via Plissé to the left, which starts out slightly downhill, until you reach a tunnel. You can go through the tunnel or take the trail to the left, which will take you beneath the ski lifts. After the tunnel, continue along the paved road to the right, passing uphill past the houses and above the campground as the first panels telling the tale of Pluc, one bit at a time, begin to appear to entertain children as they walk.

Continuing along paved roads, pass a shrine, then turn right, continuing uphill, when you come near a group of houses. Turn right again onto a dirt road that will cut off one of the switchbacks of the paved road. On the paved road again, pass a couple of houses, then, when the road starts to head down again, take the dirt road to the right (sign: “San Barolomeo”).

The next section is more enjoyable, climbing very gradually alongside an idyllic valley that, in winter, is part of a ski run. Keep climbing gradually up to the church of San Bartolomeo on the crest of the hill, where you will have a view over the untamed valleys towards Roburent.
