HEREMITAGE OF BELMONTE - BUSCA

Architectural complex known since ancient times as “Belmonte”, it originated in the thirteenth century with the construction of the Cappella della Madonna and the monastery of the women’s Certosa di Santa Maria di Belmonte which, in the fifteenth century passed to the Dominican nuns. In the early seventeenth century the complex was then sold to the Camaldolese of San Romualdo and became a devotional centre and a mecca for pilgrims. In the nineteenth century, the complex was purchased by local nobles, used as a stately villa and enriched with paintings of mythological subjects by Francesco Gonin. During World War II, the abbey church was so badly damaged by the bombings that, to date, all that remains of the sacred space is a few ruins.
