CASTLE OF THE COUNTS CEPOLLINI DI ALTO E CAPRAUNA

In 1320, the Cepollini Counts had a castle-fortress built in Alto facing away from the town. The opposite side, towards the south, overlooks the Val Pennavaira, facing the Castello di Aquila d’Arroscia. Significantly, the part towards the valley, on whose façade a picturesque loggia opens on the 2nd floor, was only erected in the 15th century. During the French invasion of 1796 the Castle was sacked and partly destroyed; it remained in ruins until the end of the 19th century, when it was adapted by demolishing the highest parts of the two towers and covering the whole complex with a pitched roof. Today the Ghibelline battlements emerge under the eaves of the roof.
