ROCCERÈ ARCHAEOLOGICAL AREA - ROCCABRUNA

In Roccabruna, in the Maira Valley, the Roccerè is one of the most important Bronze Age rock art sites in Europe, first surveyed in 1993 by the Archaeological Map of Piedmont. It holds the record for the level of concentration of engravings, with over 35,000 cup marks in about 20,000 square metres, and boasts the prehistoric solar calendar aligned with solstices and equinoxes.

A sacred mountain for ancient peoples, the Roccerè is a spiritual and mysterious place that is also fascinating for its morphology and views. The engravings, mainly linked to an animist cult, were made during celebratory, commemorative, initiatory and propitiatory rites under the direction of shamans or sorcerers. Today, they provide a veritable story carved into the rock, propelling the visitor some 4,000 years back in time.

In Sant'Anna di Roccabruna, at the Rocceré visitor centre, you can immerse yourself in the archaeological area thanks to articles, projects, documentation and photographic material. It is precisely from the fragrant pine forest of Sant'Anna di Roccabruna that the loop trail starts, leading to the summit of the mountain where the famous prehistoric engravings can be admired. The moderately demanding route, interspersed with wooden panels at the main crossroads and signposted every 100 metres by gold trapezoidal markings (in addition to the usual red and white markings), has a difference in altitude of about 600 metres and can be covered in about five hours.

From May to September, guided tours on foot and with a convenient shuttle service are available by appointment. Guided tours, led by the duly licensed hiking guides of Associazione Amici del Roccerè (Association of Friends of the Roccerè), provide access to the Masso Altare path, an ideal spot to see countless cup-shaped figures of enigmatic interpretation, including that of the 'Ré', the site's most important anthropomorphic figure.
