PIOZZO

CITY OF THE PUMPKIN

Piozzo is a village between the plain and the Langhe, lapped by the waters of the Tanaro River. A land of great agricultural tradition, it is known in particular for its pumpkins, which it celebrates every year with a colourful fair. The village and its countryside offer plenty of ideas for a walk, and opportunities for discovering the local treasures.

At the gates of the Langa, where the Tanaro river irrigates and enriches an area with a great agricultural vocation, the village of Piozzo is known for the production of pumpkins which are celebrated every first Sunday in October during the Regional Pumpkin Fair, an event that attracts foodies from all over the region. In addition to the market, where about 500 different varieties of vegetables are exhibited, menus featuring only pumpkins are available, from pumpkin-based appetizers to pumpkin desserts, and even pumpkin beer.

In fact beer is the product that has made Piozzo famous in recent years, thanks to the genius and craftsmanship of Teo Musso who has been producing Birra Baladin there since 1996. From the pub, which still overlooks the main square of the town today and from the workshops, which can be visited with guided tours, the beers brewed by Baladin have now spread to all four corners of the globe.

The centre of the resort hosts interesting sacred places dated between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, such as the brotherhoods of the Battuti Bianchi and Battuti Neri. An unmissable stop, for more romantic visitors, is a visit to the orange Giant Bench and, behind it, to the Santuario di Nostra Signora dell’Alba Rosa, an elegant temple overlooking a large panoramic view of the entire valley of the Tanaro River and the nearby hills of the Langhe.

Leaving the centre, between Carrù and Bene Vagienna is the Cappella di San Bernardo. It contains a number of splendid, emotionally charged frescoes, dated 1451, and recently restored. These include an important cycle concerning the legend of the Pilgrim of Compostela and San Giacomo Maggiore. Of extraordinary beauty, it is one of a kind in the Monregalese area. You can visit the chapel on your own thanks to the Chiese a porte aperte app.

In the Castelletto region, the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Mirra is of particular interest, with its original sixteenth-century structure, extended over the centuries. The ancient apse still bears a splendid depiction of the "Madonna in mandorla", a valuable work of Gothic art.
