MOROZZO

AND THE ANCIENT FIERA DEL CAPPONE

Morozzo, nestled in the Cuneo countryside, is one of the oldest towns in the Monregalese area. Considered the land of the capon, king of Piedmontese tables during the Christmas holidays and a Slow Food Presidium, Morozzo is also home to a natural oasis, protected due to its variety of environments and living species.

Morozzo, one of the oldest villages in the Monregalese area, is a small town in the plain known for its capon farms. A capon is a neutered cockerel with shiny, colourful plumage. Its tender and delicate meat, perfect in a wide range of recipes, is highly sought-after for Christmas menus. The town dedicates the ancient Fiera del Cappone to the bird, a highly traditional event that takes place every year in December, featuring a well-stocked market for visitors to browse. During the event, capon-based products prepared by local food companies and delicious dishes cooked by the town's restaurateurs can be tasted.

The village boasts the presence of an elegant historic residence that once belonged to the noble family of the Marquises of Pamparato. The Castello is located in the centre of the town, surrounded by a spectacular park. The past splendour of the building was recently restored by the family who now own it, making it into an ideal elegant wedding venue.

The origins of the Santuario del Brichetto, also known as the Chiesa di Santa Maria, date back to the 12th century. Today, the church still preserves fifteenth-century frescoes by painter Giovanni Mazzucco. His cycle of paintings on the life of the Madonna is one of the most fascinating and complete in Piedmont. The name del Brichetto derives from the fact that the building is located outside the town, on a small hill, known as bric in Piedmontese.

Nature lovers cannot miss a visit to the Riserva Naturale di Crava e Morozzo. It hosts a surprising variety of environments: two artificial lakes and four ponds surrounded by dense forest and riverside vegetation. Here, a host of wildlife is waiting to be discovered, thanks to the many stopping and observation points, including a submerged hut affording an unusual view of the fish and ducks. Here, bird watchers can photograph as many as 200 different species of resident or migratory birds. An atmospheric path leads to the heart of the reserve where the Centro Visite Lipu and the guesthouse are located.
