MORETTA

A BLEND OF HISTORY AND LOCAL PRODUCE

Moretta is known for the quality of its dairy products which, along with the agricultural sector, are the main economic resources of the territory. The first permanent settlements in the area date back to the Middle Ages. And the traces of the fief still surviving today include the majestic castle that watches over the town.

The first written documents attesting to the existence of Moretta date back to the Middle Ages, while the oldest proof of activity found in the area can be traced to the Roman era. In 1362, the Acaja family passed the fiefdom to the allies of the Solaro family, in order to limit the expansionist aims of the Marquises of Saluzzo.

The new Lords oversaw the reconstruction of the castle.
In the same period, the inhabited area also grew. Documents from the end of the 14th century record the presence, beside the castrum domini, of a burgus, consisting of a nucleus of houses built around the ancient Chiesa di Santa Maria del Borgo, and of a "receptus", a settlement fortified by a wall and surrounded by a moat, accessible via a drawbridge. Following the signing of the Peace of Cateau-Cambrésis, Moretta passed permanently to the House of Savoy, to which the Solaro family always remained loyal, always occupying key positions in its court through the centuries.

The parish church, dedicated to St. John the Baptist and the Virgin Mary, and located in the town centre, is of baroque style. The harmonious design of the building has been attributed to engineer Carlo Gerolamo Re, active in the area of the Saluzzo plain in the first quarter of the 18th century.

In the direction of Villafranca, about a kilometre from the residential part of the town, the Santuario della Beata Vergine del Pilone is an example of the Piedmontese baroque style, constructed entirely in exposed brick. It was built starting from 1685 near a pre-existing votive pillar dedicated to the Virgin as the protagonist of miraculous events.

Today the Istituto lattiero caseario e delle tecnologie alimentari is housed within the sanctuary complex, a training centre offering special postgraduate courses for the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine - University of Turin and the Istituto Nord Ovest Qualità. In addition to its training activities, the Institute is a committed provider of numerous support and technical assistance projects in the sector. It is also the seat of the Piedmontese dairy consultancy agency for farms.
